About Wordy

What is Wordy?

Wordy is a vocabulary lookup tool for language learners. Paste a batch of words or phrases and you get clean cards with definitions, parts of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and example sentences — in your target language and your native one.

Which languages do you support?

English is the only target language right now (the words you look up). We translate definitions and glosses into your choice of:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Chinese
  • Turkish

More target languages on the roadmap.

Do I need an account?

No — you can try Wordy without signing up. Anonymous visitors see a sample card built from your first word plus three preview words from our dictionary.

A free account unlocks 25 of your own words per month and saves your lookup history.

Pricing & billing

What do the plans include?
  • Free · $0 forever — 25 words/mo, 1 collection, 3 practice sessions/mo.
  • Explorer · $9/mo or $89/yr — 200 words/mo, 10 collections, unlimited practice, pronunciation audio.
  • Immerse · $19/mo or $189/yr — 1,000 words/mo, unlimited collections, unlimited practice, pronunciation audio.

See the Pricing page for the full comparison.

What happens if I cancel?

You keep your paid features until the end of your current billing cycle, then your account drops to Free automatically. We don't prorate or refund the unused portion — you've already paid for it, use it.

Your lookups, collections, and history stay. You just lose paid-tier benefits: more monthly words, more collections, pronunciation audio.

Can I switch plans mid-cycle?
  • Upgrades — take effect immediately. We charge a prorated amount for the rest of the cycle.
  • Downgrades — take effect at the end of the current cycle, same as cancellation.
Do I have to give you a card to sign up?

No. Free is free forever — no card, no trial, no upsell pop-ups. We don't ask for payment until you choose to upgrade.

How does the rolling 30-day word limit work?

Your allowance is "X words in the last 30 days" — not a calendar month. Two things to know:

  • Words expire 30 days after you look them up — that's when you get the allowance back, not on the 1st of the month.
  • Repeats are free. If you look up a word you've already looked up before, it doesn't count against your quota again.

Features

How accurate are the definitions?

Definitions are generated by Claude (Anthropic) and reviewed for accuracy on the most-common vocabulary. Rare words may have occasional rough edges.

If a definition looks wrong, please flag it via the Contact page — we track every report.

What is pronunciation audio?

Click the speaker icon next to any word and we play it for you in the target language. The audio is generated by ElevenLabs (a professional voice service) and cached so subsequent users hear it instantly.

Available on Explorer and Immerse. Free users see the speaker icon as a lock that links to Pricing.

Why doesn't Wordy speak my language?

We do translate definitions and glosses into your native language, and the language picker shows native names. The interface itself (buttons, headings, error messages) is currently English-only.

Full UI localization is on the roadmap.

What are practice sessions?

Five drills built from your lookups:

  • Flashcards — self-rated recall — flip the card, say "got it" or "review again".
  • Sentence completion — pick the missing word from an example sentence.
  • Story filling — drop your words into a short passage, then check your answers.
  • Synonym match — pick the synonym or antonym from four options.
  • Listening — audio multiple-choice; we say the word, you pick it. Paid only.

Free includes 3 practice sessions per month. Paid tiers are unlimited.

Can I save words to study later?

Yes. On any results page, click "Save lookup" to add the words to a collection. Then practice them later from the Collections page.

  • Free — 1 collection.
  • Explorer — 10 collections.
  • Immerse — unlimited collections.
What's coming next?

Spaced repetition, a daily email with a story built from your own words, smarter history that surfaces what you struggle with, a "native phrasing" helper for the email or message you actually need to send, and more target languages.

The full list, grouped by how close it is, lives on the roadmap.

Privacy & data

What do you do with my lookups?
  • We store your lookup history so you can come back to it.
  • We use it to build personalized practice drills.
  • We cache dictionary entries across all users — that's how repeats are free for everyone.
  • We don't sell your data. We don't use your lookups to train models.
How do I export my data?

Settings → Export gives you a single JSON file with your account, all lookups, and all collections. Standard GDPR portability dump.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings → Delete account. Here's what happens:

  • You're immediately signed out, and all your active sessions on other devices are revoked.
  • Your row is soft-deleted — you can't sign in anymore.
  • Personal data is anonymized within 30 days.

Your contributions to the shared dictionary cache stay (they're not attributed to you and contain no personal data).

Do you send marketing emails?

Only if you opt in. Settings → Emails has separate toggles for product updates and reminder emails.

Account-essential emails (email verification, password reset, billing receipts) always send.
